Finding the motivation to stay physically active and healthy becomes much more complicated as the weather changes. The days are becoming shorter, darker and colder. It seems much easier to stay cozy on the couch, next to the fire, watching Netflix than to get up and exercise. But it can be the time when you really need it the most for both your physical and mental health. Here are a few ways to motivate yourself to stay active during the winter months.
Ask a Friend
Even on a cold day, bundling up and going for a walk with a friend can warm the soul. It doesn’t have to be anything challenging. Going for an hour’s walk around the block or through some trails is a good source of exercise. The fresh air and catching up with a friend will also be sure to make anyone’s day better and increase motivation.
Workout in the Living Room
Exercising at home is very simple and accessible now. Whether that be an online yoga class, HITT workout or strength training, you can pull out your equipment (if required) right in front of the couch and the fireplace to stay cozy. Even if it’s just 20 minutes, you can get your exercise in and kickstart the rest of your day from home.
Make it a Challenge
Having others keep you honest and throwing in some slight competition can create all the motivation you need. Challenge friends, your partner, colleagues, your family, or anyone to just one 30-minute activity daily.
Here at Wildewood Health, we are currently in a Movember challenge with Advance Health and Performance to raise money for a good cause and motivate each other to stay as healthy and active as possible.
Join a Class
Joining a class can make working out fun and easy. Socialize and get a good workout while only taking an hour out of your day. Wildewood Health has small group strength and conditioning classes for women. Bring a friend to motivate each other to keep each other going each week. You will get a great workout in, have fun, meet new people and get stronger. Leave feeling accomplished and maybe a bit sore.
Wildewood Health also offers one-on-one strength and conditioning sessions. Learn what types of exercises will work best for your goals. Be committed to the once-a-week sessions to stay motivated. Push yourself and your body to be healthier, all while escaping the cold!
Staying active throughout the winter can be a challenge. But maintaining 30 minutes a day can be crucial for your health. Activity can also help your mental health throughout the cold and dark winter. Try incorporating one of the practices into your weekly routine; you may find it becomes a new habit. Find a friend or an activity at home, or see us at Wildewood Health to keep you motivated!
