What is Pilates?
Pilates was developed in the early 20th century by Joseph Pilates, who first introduced his technique while working with injured soldiers during World War I. His method emphasized controlled movements, posture, and core strength, using minimal equipment. Later, when he moved to the United States, Pilates refined his techniques and opened his own studio, where he trained dancers, athletes, and individuals looking to improve their movement efficiency.
Pilates exercises focus on stabilizing deep muscles, allowing controlled movements while mobilizing other areas. It can be performed on a mat or using a reformer, a piece of sliding equipment designed to provide resistance and challenge balance, coordination, and strength.

What is the Difference Between Pilates and Clinical Pilates?
At Wildewood Health, Clinical Pilates takes traditional Pilates principles and combines them with rehabilitation techniques guided by a registered physiotherapist. Unlike traditional Pilates classes, which focus on general fitness, Clinical Pilates is tailored to individual needs and is often used in conjunction with manual therapy and exercise-based rehabilitation.
During your Clinical Pilates session, our physiotherapist will assess and modify exercises to best suit your rehabilitation goals. Key areas of focus include:
✅ Posture education
✅ Scapular control & stability
✅ Breathing techniques for movement efficiency
✅ Core strength & muscle activation
✅ Proper positioning to prevent overuse injuries
By addressing these elements, Clinical Pilates can help reduce pain, restore movement, and improve function for long-term benefits.
Who Can Benefit from Clinical Pilates?
Clinical Pilates is suitable for people of all ages and activity levels, including:
✔️ Individuals recovering from injuries or surgery
